Monday 16th April 2012 - Annual MWG Competition Entries were up this year to 48, probably due to the committee organizing the event around no categories, at the time it was not known if this would be successful but it turned out to be a winner with the members.
The judges, BobMcCallum and Keith Betteridge were impressed with the overall standard of entries, the close points at the time their sheets were tallied. As each prize was announced the judges made generous comments and the prize winner had the opportunity to talk about the item and its production.
Congratulations to the Winners. 1st Prize - Michael Walker, a new member to the guild, and taking out the top prize. The piece was a Jarrah Rustic Basket, well executed, good finish, a well balanced idea that stood out. Michael in reply said it was going to be quite different while it was on the lathe. He was just getting the finish he wanted when it came off the lathe, much crashing and banging finally came to rest in two pieces. For some time the language was not repeatable. After some time Michael realised it was recoverable, just took time to sort out how. There were a couple of bad areas that needed attention, that was where the handle was mounted. some stitching with more metal to join the two halves of the base. At the end of the day a better result than the original idea. Well done Michael.
2nd Prize - Ian Franklin. Another new member to the guild with a Ukulele. The judges were very impressed with Ian’s work and the finish achieved. A well made item with good curves and lines. Unfortunately Ian wasn’t present on the night.
3rd Prize - Graeme Stones with a beautifully presented Intartia “Muddy Waters”. The attention to detail was apparent to everyone, all aspects were paid particular attention to first class presentation and finish. The back of the item was well finished, the stand had that extra amount of attention, the name plate was excellent, and the item itself was just spectacular right down to a Black Maire slug in it’s mouth. In reply Graeme thanked Allan Sanson, for all but ready to give up woodwork after my father passed away, but he pushed me to keep going and don’t give up. Thanks Allan.
4th Prize - Bill Sewell with a Segmented Rimu & Wenge Fruit Bowl. The segmented Rimu base and rim were very well made, right up there with Bill’s finish. Having made those the question was how did it all get put together with the Wenge spokes at an angle, glued into perfectly drilled holes also at an angle. Bill’s answer, “with some difficulty”.
5th Prize - Michael Walker with a four piece item, an Oak bowl, a Cherry & Rata Apple, a Sycamore & Jarrah Apple, and a Totara & Black Maire Pear. The whole assembly was very well arranged and put together. The judges were impressed with the bowl which was quite out of the ordinary, plus the three pieces of fruit.
6th Prize - Eddie Hall with a Segmented Vase 450 x 200mm. A very attractive piece of work that obviously took a long time to make. Attractive selection of colour and position for the segments. The judges were very complimentary with their comments. Eddie had to explain that the inside was turned right down to the bottom layer.
7th Prize - Bill Sewell with a Macrocarpa Bowl. A well finished bowl, the rim was embellished with three triangles repeated all the way round. Underneath it rested on turned legs
Highly Commended - Craig Morgan. Four scroll saw animals, cat, dog, rabbit and pig. The judges awarded Craig, a young man who works hard with his scroll saw.
All in all a very good night was had by those who attended. A hearty round of applause for a job well done by the judges.
Sunday 15th May 2011 - Open Day A very good day to be inside the Arena 5 complex, however not so good for all of our visitors travelling to and from Palmerston North. We were joined by the commercial folk; Bill Owen from Oamaru, Capital Books from Wellington, Tree Workx from Matamata and the ToolShed from Palmerston North. They all looked to have a busy day. Competitions were keeping the ‘woodies’ on their toes and attracted a good following. Results were as follows:
